BOUNCING BACK!
It would be relatively easy to write an article bemoaning the recent bad weather and its adverse effect on our regular attendances and cash flow. (Even my ‘Golden Girls’ have failed to turn up this year for their Wednesday afternoon Bingo sessions!) However, such an article would do a great disservice to those members who did so much to ensure our Christmas and New Year celebrations were so successful. Our New Year’s Eve Disco Ceilidh was terrific and I can only hope that readers brought in the New Year in as boisterous and fun fashion as the sell out crowd in our Clubhouse. Again, I am indebted to the team that decorated the hall and prepared such a sumptuous buffet as well as our bar staff who kept us well ‘refreshed’. That was followed on New Year’s Day with a crowded Clubhouse of members and guests who watched excitedly our fireworks display. Those events and some special birthday celebrations – including Mrs Bette Lyall’s 100th birthday party - have helped us ‘bounce back’ into the new year. Hearty congratulations to this great lady!
Social events feature prominently here in the close season but our primary focus remains on bowls. So, it’s nice to report on a bowls issue. I was taken to task recently by Billy (‘Running Bear’) Davidson for failing to give due prominence to the significance of the wins that he and Maxie Baigrie achieved in the Two Bowl and Four Bowl Pairs Competitions last year. Those Competitions were last won by the same pair in the same year some 27 years ago! So, to Billy (who is a great Elvis Presley fan) and Maxie I can only say ‘I just can’t help believin’ I missed that marvelous achievement! Billy’s comments had this ‘teddy bear’ ‘all shook up’ and I hid in the ‘Heartbreak Hotel’ instead of ‘crying in the chapel’ as I feared the imprint of his ‘blue suede shoes’ on my backside. So guys, ‘don’t be cruel!’ I hope this testament in the C&B News to ‘the wonder of you’ both will soothe your ‘suspicious minds’ and prove a ‘good luck charm’ so I can get out of the ‘jailhouse (rock)’ and stop being a ‘moody blue’.
All these song references remind me that Social Secretary Ron Duguid has lined up a great array of talent for our month end cabaret nights beginning with the fabulous Karen Logan on 26 February.
Sadly, I have to record the deaths of Life Member Margaret Fairgrieve and former Member Janet Manson both of whom were well loved and respected by all in the Club who knew them. They will be sorely missed.
